Find local resources, there are lots of them out there like: The Rosie Network, Service 2 CEO, and SCORE

 

Work the startup business on side till you're ready to go all in full time

 

Get a business coach

 

Have persistence, don't be afraid of bugging people until you get help. Sometimes they are busy and just cannot get back to you right away.

Start your transition a year out

Refine your soft skills, like facial expression and public speaking

Find an entrepreneurship symposium for Veterans. Desheun did and he won so he got capital as a prize that went towards starting his business.

Find the right team

Try a business model canvas. You can use the canvas to describe, design, challenge, and pivot your business model because a business plan can change the minute it hits people or customers. Desheun quoted Mike Tyson saying "Everybody has a plan till they get hit in the mouth".

Have passion for what you are doing if you want to succeed

Care more about the vision and mission, not money, helping others is rewarding

Be willing to take advice and change to meet your customers' needs

Todd is additionally a fellow podcaster and I recently had the privilege of meeting him at Podfest 2017, the Podfest Multimedia Expo in Orlando Florida. Todd founded the People's Choice Podcast Awards and was also inducted into the Podcast Hall of Fame in 2015. He also wrote the first book on podcasting.

Plan a yearly team retreat (strategy session) if your core team is spread out over great distances

 

Financing can be very difficult for a small business so find a funding source

 

Understand the commitment and dedication required to succeed, you will have to work long hours

 

Keep an eye on the competition and watch for shift in the marketplace, Todd uses monitor.com

 

Have a passion for what you want to do and it will make a difference when things get hard

 

Make sure your spouse and kids are on board since they are impacted as well
